In this novel of 37 AD, which reviewers are calling "a complete page turner," "beautifully written," and "a great read," Caligula Caesar has just become Rome's new master. Senator Titus Carinna, who helped him succeed to the throne, knows the inexperienced young ruler needs a companion he can trust. It's a pity the Senator's older son, Caligula's closest friend, committed suicide after being charged with treason. But that still leaves Marcus, his second son.

Headstrong and hot-tempered, Marcus would rather prove his courage by leading legions against Rome's enemies. Yet when his father calls him home from the frontier, he has no choice but to befriend Caligula --the man he blames for not saving his brother.

Caught in a web of deceit, conspiracy, and betrayal reaching from Palatine mansions to the city's grimy, teeming streets, he will uncover a dark secret that threatens his family, the woman he desires, even his life... and may bring chaos to the young Roman Empire.

The characters in this book certainly lived in precarious times. Life was cheap, and easily lost, because the guy in charge, who seemed to become more unstable and erratic every day, was prone to anger, and when he got angry, people got hurt and often died. To stay alive required a fine sense of awareness, and a constant consideration of the potential consequences of one’s actions. The mental instability and viciousness of the one who needed to be pleased, together with the inability to predict his reactions to events, must have made the lives of those around him a daily grind of stress, uncertainty and anxiety.

This was ancient Rome, in 37 AD, and the insane ruler was the emperor Caligula.

Into this world returns Marcus Licinius Carinna, who has been fighting Rome’s enemies on the edges of the empire. His father is Caligula’s advisor. His late brother was Caligula’s close friend; he recently committed suicide under questionable circumstances. Caligula misses him so much that Marcus is encouraged to take his brother’s place. Against his better judgment (Marcus would prefer to return to fight with the legions), he agrees, and he becomes introduced to the crazy, frightening and capricious court of Caligula.

I enjoyed reading this book. The characters are well described, good guys and bad guys (and girls) alike. Rome was a slave society, and the close relationships between the aristocratic owners and their household slaves are realistically depicted. The city scenes in the streets, homes and palaces in Rome are believable as well. I’ve been to Rome and have slipped on its wet cobblestones. Throughout the book, the author has a nice way with words, making you feel as if you’re in the scene as you observe it. In one particular sequence, the author creates very exciting descriptions of Marcus’ pursuit of a bad guy (not Caligula: his adopted son, who tried to kill his dad; you really have to read the book).

On his trip back to Rome from the legions in Germany, Marcus is escorting a group of Germanic hostages, one of whom is an attractive priestess. Her presence provides a nice opportunity for a romance to develop between the barbarian priestess and the Roman aristocrat, whose family expected him to come home and marry a proper Roman woman.

Whether he is spending his time trying to figure out how to identify and avoid the dangers of working with and appeasing a lunatic, or devising a way to get himself and his girlfriend out of Caligula’s clutches, the overriding theme I get from this book is one of survival: it is our nature to adapt, to survive, and to love, in the face of what must have been the most horrific circumstances. As I said earlier, I enjoyed this book. It was entertaining and well worth reading.

Delightful and beautifully written. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Roma Amor transports you back in time to ancient Rome during the reign of Caligula. With every page the plot thickens keeping you turning the pages to find out what will happen. Full of colorful description you can picture what life was like and almost smell the atmosphere.
I absolutely loved this book. The author tells a tale that keeps your attention until the last page and there is an unpredictable twist that I will leave unsaid. If you love historical novels you will love this book of Caligula's Rome. Be prepared to be drawn into ancient Roman society in a way that vividly entertains.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I learned more about post republican Rome. The religion of Ceasarian Rome was evident and the dependence on slavery was in evidence. Rome's military success was dependent on the elite class. Brittain's success later was similarly founded on the noble families together with extraordinary men.
I found the book to very informative and intriguing.
This engrossing book kept me up all night! The characters are sympathetic and well-drawn, and throughout the novel, I was hoping for a happy ending.

This book reminded me of Donna Gillespie’s international bestsellers from some years back (Lady of the Light and the Light Bearer) and I enjoyed this story as much as Gillespie’s work.
I first read this book when it was in draft form and I was nursing my wounds on the coast of Maine, fresh from a European romance gone sideways. Full disclosure I'm the author's niece. I also happen to love this book, and I'm lucky to be related to her or else maybe I would have missed this beautiful story.

For junkies of historical fiction, it is entirely thrilling to discover a new author who will bring you into a world you know a little but would love to know better. This book takes you to Caligula's Rome and you breathe there. You smell the horses and the baths. After reading ROMA AMOR, I deeply understand something about where our current civilization comes from that I never learned in years of lectures and text-book readings.

More importantly, to me at least, this book is a love story. It is definitely a love story about wildness seeking its mate...but it is also a story about familial love. About the love between a man and his father—maybe the hardest kind of love story to tell because it is kept secret from all of us, especially from the father and the son. I am so lonely for Marcus and hungry to return to his world. Sequel, please!
